Tidy completion and final checks
A good decorating service should leave the space looking cleaner, sharper and easier to enjoy. From careful preparation to the final finish, the work is planned around the condition of the surfaces, the type of property and the result needed so the finished room feels properly completed.
Professional Interior and Exterior Decorating
Interior and exterior decorating involves preparing and finishing surfaces so they look clean, consistent and suitable for daily use. This can include filling minor cracks, sanding surfaces, painting walls, ceilings and woodwork, hanging wallpaper and improving tired areas that no longer suit the property. Outside, decorating may also help protect surfaces from weathering while improving the overall appearance.
Professional execution matters because the finish depends heavily on preparation. Paint applied over poor surfaces, damp areas or loose material can quickly show defects. Wallpaper can also lift, bubble or misalign if the walls are not prepared correctly.
A skilled decorating team can repair, restore and improve rooms or exterior areas with care, helping create a finish that looks smoother, lasts longer and feels right for the property.

Frequently Asked Questions About Painting and Decorating
What does painting and decorating involve?
Painting and decorating involves preparing and finishing internal or external surfaces to improve appearance, protection and overall condition. This can include cleaning surfaces, filling small cracks, sanding, priming, painting walls and ceilings, glossing woodwork and hanging wallpaper.
The exact work depends on the property, the condition of the surfaces and the finish required. Preparation is usually one of the most important stages because paint and wallpaper only perform well when applied to stable, clean and suitable backgrounds.
When should you consider professional decorating services?
Professional decorating services should be considered when walls, ceilings, woodwork or exterior surfaces look tired, marked, uneven or difficult to finish neatly. They are also useful after renovation work, before selling or renting a property or when a room needs a more polished result than basic DIY can provide.
Professional help is especially valuable where surfaces need repair, wallpaper needs accurate alignment or exterior areas require suitable preparation. A well-finished space can improve comfort, presentation and the overall feel of the property.
How much does interior painting and decorating typically cost?
Interior painting and decorating costs vary depending on the size of the space, the condition of the surfaces, the number of rooms and the materials being used. A simple repaint of clean walls will usually cost less than a full decorating project involving repairs, woodwork, ceilings, wallpapering or specialist finishes. Access can also affect cost, especially on stairwells, high ceilings or awkward areas.
Paint choice makes a real difference too, as premium brands such as Farrow & Ball can cost around three times more than ranges like Dulux. Most suppliers can colour match across brands, but a match is rarely identical to the original brand you are trying to copy, so it is worth putting plenty of tester pots on the wall and checking them in different light before settling on a brand and colour. The most accurate price normally depends on viewing the space, checking preparation needs and confirming the level of finish required.
How long does exterior painting and decorating usually take?
Exterior painting and decorating can take from a few days to several weeks depending on the property size, access, surface condition and weather. Smaller jobs such as doors, trim or single elevations are usually quicker than full exterior repainting.
Preparation often adds time because loose paint, damaged surfaces, cracks or weathered areas need attention before painting begins. Weather is also a key factor since exterior coatings usually need dry, suitable conditions to cure correctly. Rushing this stage can affect the finish and durability.
How should I prepare for a decorating service?
Preparing for a decorating service usually means clearing surfaces, moving smaller items and giving access to the areas being worked on. Pictures, ornaments, curtains and fragile items should be removed where practical.
Furniture may need to be moved into the centre of the room or away from walls so surfaces can be reached safely. For exterior decorating, access routes, gates and areas around walls or windows should be kept clear. Good preparation helps reduce delays and protects belongings during the work.
How long do the results of professional decorating last?
The results of professional decorating can last for several years when surfaces are prepared properly and suitable materials are used. Longevity depends on the room type, daily wear, ventilation, moisture levels and whether the area is internal or external.
High-use rooms, hallways and bathrooms may need refreshing sooner than low-traffic areas. Exterior paintwork is affected by weather, sunlight and surface condition. Regular cleaning, good airflow and quick attention to small cracks or peeling areas can help maintain the finish for longer.
Is DIY a good alternative to professional wallpapering and decorating?
DIY can be suitable for simple painting tasks but it is often harder to achieve a consistent professional finish. Wallpapering, detailed woodwork, high ceilings, exterior surfaces and damaged walls usually need more skill, time and preparation.
Common DIY issues include visible roller marks, uneven cutting-in, poor coverage, peeling paint, misaligned wallpaper and rough repaired areas showing through the finish. DIY may reduce labour cost but professional decorating can be more reliable when the appearance, durability and final detail matter.
What should I look for when choosing a decorating provider?
A decorating provider should have relevant experience, clear communication, suitable insurance and a good understanding of preparation, materials and finish quality. It is helpful to look for examples of previous decorating work, realistic timeframes and a clear explanation of what is included.
Surface preparation should be discussed because it has a major effect on the final result. A reliable provider should also explain access needs, likely disruption, drying times and how the work area will be protected during the project.
What to Expect from a Professional Decorating Service
A professional decorating service should give clear expectations around cost, preparation, disruption and timeframes.
Some dust, odour and temporary room disruption are normal but the work should be kept organised and tidy. Reliable scheduling, proper surface preparation and clear updates help the project feel controlled from the first stage through to the final finish.
Our Decorating Process for Homes and Workplaces
The process starts with understanding the space, the surfaces and the finish you want. The work is then planned around access, preparation and materials.
During the job, surfaces are repaired, protected and decorated in the right order. At completion, the finish is checked so the room or exterior area feels ready to use.

The quote from BTB was clear from the start and they stuck to it even when we decided to add another wall at the last minute. No fuss, no extra charges.
The finish on the ceilings is perfect and you can’t see any of the old marks that were there before. Good honest pricing and a proper job at the end of it.

We wanted the colours to match the existing curtains and furniture we already had. They brought plenty of samples and helped us narrow it down so it all works together.
The bedrooms look so much more pulled together now. It was worth taking the extra time at the beginning to get the shades right rather than guessing.

The woodwork throughout the hallway and stairs was quite intricate with lots of detail on the spindles and we were worried it would be rushed. They took their time sanding and filling every little bit before applying the gloss in thin coats.
The finish is beautiful and looks like it has always been there. It was a bigger job than we first realised but they never cut corners. Neighbours have all commented on how smart it looks now. Worth every penny for the level of care that went into it.

We needed the spare room sorted quickly before my daughter came home from university for the summer. They fitted us in and got it done in three days with proper prep on the walls.
She was really pleased with the colour and how fresh it feels. Nice to have a team who can work to a tight deadline without rushing the important bits.

The previous decorators had done a terrible job on the feature wall in the dining room and the wallpaper was already lifting at the edges. These lads stripped it all back properly, repaired the plaster and hung new paper so it actually matches at the seams.
They also painted the rest of the room to tie in perfectly. It finally looks like we always wanted it to. Took a bit of extra time to get right but the result speaks for itself. Can’t recommend them highly enough if you want it done properly.

We had the dining room and kitchen done to tie in with new flooring we were having laid. They worked around the fitters really well and the colours we chose look even better now everything is finished.
Ben was spot on with his advice on the eggshell for the woodwork. The whole area feels much more cohesive. Took about a week and they left it spotless every evening. Very happy with how it came together.

We have had them back three times now for different rooms and they have never let us down. Same tidy approach, same good communication and same high standard of finish every time.
This latest job on the kitchen was no exception. They worked around the units and appliances without any issues and left everything spotless. It is nice to have a team you can trust to just get on with it properly without having to check up on them constantly.

First time we have used decorators and we were both working long hours so needed someone reliable. They sent updates most evenings and the place was always left safe and usable.
The new paint in the living room has made it feel so much cosier. Already thinking about asking them to come back for the kitchen next year.

They did a lovely job on the dining room walls. Colour looks even better than the sample and the finish is smooth with no marks.
Very pleased with it all.

Had some damp patches on the landing that needed sorting before painting could begin. They took the time to treat it properly instead of just covering it up.
The paint has stayed perfect since and no sign of it coming back. Good to find someone who knows what they are doing with these older properties.
